Canon Releases Firmware Fix for R5C, Addressing Recording Issues

Canon has released a firmware fix for the Canon EOS R5C full-frame 8K mirrorless camera. The fix addresses several bugs that cause issues during video recording under certain conditions and must be installed with the camera set to VIDEO mode.

The Canon R5C recently grabbed headlines because Netflix reportedly rejected the 8K full-frame mirrorless camera for certification. As a result, filmmakers are limited to no more than 10 percent of footage being captured using the R5C.

The limitation has been levied due to what is believed to be a lack of C-Log 2 as an HDR capturing option. Sony experienced the same issue with the FX3 but addressed that shortcoming with a firmware update that garnered them Netflix’s blessing.

Canon could’ve opted to add CLog-2 to the R5C’s tool set as well on this update, but solely focused on more immediate recording issues.

Firmware version 1.0.2.1 fixes an issue in which, when the camera is set to Continuous Recording in Video Mode, the camera record function will not engage. The update also addresses minor issues when using a CINE-SERVO lens in VIDEO mode.

In addition to addressing these bugs, Canon has also added a new Mic Audio Off option in Video Mode which will enable users to manually turn off the internal microphone. There are also other housekeeping fixes to improve the overall performance of the R5C.

To install Firmware version 1.0.2.1, make sure that your Canon R5C is already running firmware version 1.0.0.1 – 1.0.1.1. Then set your camera to VIDEO MODE before installation begins. Canon also states that an SD Card of 512MB or greater must be used for the firmware update.

Moreover, the completed update will reset your camera’s menu settings. Therefore, if the camera has been set up with customized features in the menu, it is recommended that users save their menu settings as settings data to an SD card, prior to starting update operations. This SD card should be a separate card from the SD card used to carry out the update.

This saved data can be loaded into the camera and the settings can be changed after the update has been completed. The camera instruction manual has a section entitled “Save/Load Settings on Card” (PHOTO edition) and “Saving and Loading Menu Settings” (VIDEO Edition). Both are in the Advanced User Guide.

Hopefully, Canon will get around to adding CLog-2 in a future update, but until then, version 1.0.2.1 can be downloaded from the Canon R5C Support site.
