Canon Releases Firmware Fixes for Canon C500 MK II, C300 MK III, and EOS R3

Canon has pushed out a trio of firmware updates for the Canon C500 Mk. II, C300 Mk. III Cinema cameras, and the EOS R3 full-frame mirrorless camera.

The Version 1.0.6.1 updates address issues specific to each model, plus bring a few new features for users to explore.

Firmware version 1.0.6.1 and v 1.0.4.1 respectively, address a minor issue with the Cine-Servo lens mode, while also ensuring that recording settings are saved when switching between normal and S&F shooting modes. However, fixing bug issues and housekeeping items isn’t all this firmware accomplishes.

Canon has added a laundry list of new features which improve the performance and expand the feature set of this cinema camera. Support has been added for the Canon Expansion Unit 3 (EU-V3), plus expanded the commands for Canon IP XC Protocol. Support for VPG400 CFExpress cards has also been added.

Autofocus in S&F shooting mode is now enabled by default when frame rates are set to 24/25/30/48/50/60/100/120 frames per second. Face detection and tracking are also available when the frame rate is set from 24-120 fps. There’s also a new Focus Position Guide feature.

Moreover, there is now four-channel support in the audio meter display menu, and G Gain has been added in White Balance to the Custom Picture setting. The C300 Mk. III also gains Canon 709/BR709 in the Gamma Color Space option of the Custom Picture controls, while CMT 709 gets added to the LUT and Sub Rec Color Conversion settings.

Finally, Canon has added a few data features when certain CN lenses are attached. When using CN8×15 IAS S/E1, CN8×15 IAS S/P1, CN-E45-135mm T2.4 L F, CN-E45-135mm T2.4 L FP the C300 Mk. III can now display metadata, such as the model name and the focal distance of the lens attached, plus the T number is displayed.

In addition, there is now support for features such as Peripheral Illumination Correction and Lens Aberration Correction, Dual Pixel CMOS AF autofocus, and the Dual Pixel Focus Guide for EF mount lenses.

Canon EOS R3

Meanwhile, for the Canon EOS R3 Full-frame mirrorless camera, In firmware version 1.2.2, Canon has addressed an issue where an Err70 error message can occur when capturing video of small objects.

There have also been complaints by users that the camera battery could be ejected when the power switch is set to <ON/LOCK>. This could cause the loss of any image files and data, and the firmware update addresses this.
