Canon Firmware Update for C300 Mark II, C200, C700 and XF400/405

Canon didn’t just come empty handed to NAB 2018, and apart from their big pre-show announcement – the C700 FF (full-frame), Canon being Canon and taking care of their customers recently published the details of a series of firmware updates for their popular Cinema EOS C200 and C300 Mark II cameras, as well as top dog C700. The Canon XF400 and XF405 also benefit from a firmware update, the details of which you can read in more detail below.

Starting with the Canon C300 Mark II, the new firmware version 1.1.1.1.00 (applicable to both the EF and PL versions of the might MK2) adds improved sensitivity on the LM-V1 touch screen – the one from the Canon C200, which you can now use on your C300 II. Well, technically this functionality – to use the C200 touchscreen on the C300 MK2, was enabled with the previous firmware update and now Canon are just finessing the experience.

Read more about the rest of the updated in the paragraphs below.

  • Touch-Panel Sensitivity Adjustment

An adjustment has been made to the sensitivity of the touch panel for the LCD Monitor (LM-V1) in order to improve accuracy and lessen the occurrences of accidental changes to camera settings.

  • Lens Metadata Information (XF-AVC)

Previously lens focal length metadata was recorded in its 35mm equivalent. For users that need the actual focal length of the lens, the metadata now contains both actual and 35mm equivalent focal lengths.

  • MXF (XF-AVC) Support

The EOS C200 and C200B now support the XF-AVC format in addition to MP4 and Cinema RAW Light.

XF-AVC is available as 1920 x 1080 Full HD up to 120fps, or the 3840 x 2160 Ultra HD recording format with frame rates up to 59.94P. XF-AVC is also available in the Sub Recording mode for low-resolution proxies and dailies, and will contain camera and lens metadata matching the Cinema RAW Light files, which will facilitate offline editing.

  • Progressive Segmented Frame Support

The EOS C200/C200B now support the PsF format, allowing the signal output to be displayed to a greater range of monitors. The PsF output function from the SDI and HDMI terminals has been added, when progressive internal recording has been selected. Also, additional frame rates of 50.00i/59.94i have been included.

  • Magnification Support (4x Recording)

With previous C200 firmware versions, when the Magnification (MAGN.) button was pressed, the centre of the screen was magnified 2 x. With this firmware, users can benefit from an additional 4 x Magnification, which can be used even while recording with a second press of the SET button, helping to ensure the subject is in focus. Switching between the magnification ratios is possible by depressing the SET button again.

The last Magnification ratio used (2X, 4X) will be active the next time the MAGN. button is pressed. The actual lens field of view will be recorded even if magnification is active during recording.

  • 24-bit LPCM Audio Support in Cinema RAW Light

LCPM 24-bit audio has been added when recording in Cinema RAW Light.

  • Digital Tele-Converter (1.5x, 3.0x, 6.0x)

  • HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) Support (Output Only)

By outputting the signal from the camera in Hybrid Log Gamma, the image can be viewed on a standard or high dynamic range display that supports HLG signals.

  • Lens Metadata Information (XF-AVC)

Previously lens focal length metadata was recorded in its 35mm equivalent. For users that need the actual focal length of the lens, the metadata now contains both actual and 35mm equivalent focal lengths.

  • Touch-Panel Sensitivity Adjustment

Same as above with the C300 II firmware – New Low sensitivity mode to improve accuracy and lessen the occurrences of accidental changes to camera settings.
