As rumored for the last few months, Canon made the EOS R8 full-frame mirrorless camera official today, along with the entry-level EOS R50 APS-C mirrorless camera.
Both cameras support Canon’s RF Mount with a more compact and lightweight footprint. Now, let’s take a closer look.
Canon EOS R8

Designed to be an entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera that is higher performing than its APS-C cousin, the Canon R8 has a 24.2 mp CMOS sensor and the same DIGIC X image processor found in other models, enabling it to capture 10-bit 4K video in Canon Log 3, oversampled from 6K, at up to 60 frames per second, and has a high frame rate of 120 fps in full HD.
With Dual Pixel AF II Autofocus, the camera is capable of detecting and tracking people, animals, and vehicles.
The newcomer also has focus breathing correction, vertical video metadata, a movie-based self-timer, and audio noise reduction. Live streaming capability is also featured with UVC/UAC support, and the R8 has enhanced video correction.
Capable of continuous recording of up to two hours, the camera has no time limit to guard against overheating.
For still image shooting, the R8 can capture bursts up to six frames per second with 1st curtain electronic shutter, and up to 40 fps in full electronic mode.
The camera also has built-in WiFi connectivity and can also connect through USB. Once attached to a network, the camera can upload RAW images to the cloud for further processing.
Other key features include a 2.36 million dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3-inch 1.62m dot vari-angle LCD touchscreen.
Canon EOS R50

For the budget-conscious beginner, the Canon R50 is compact and ideal for capturing travel logs, doing selfie videos, and shooting content for the internet. Canon calls it the “jack of all content creation trades” for its lightweight footprint and stock performance.
The R50 sports a smaller 24.2 MP APS-C image sensor that can capture uncropped 4K video, oversampled from 6K, at 29.95 frames per second, and at all frame rates.
For autofocus, the camera has the same Dual Pixel AF II CMOS Autofocus technology that uses whole area tracking, general subject detection, and even offers to prerecord video (a nice bonus in an entry-level model).
The camera can capture video for up to one hour of continuous recording and offers the same focus breathing correction as the R8, vertical video metadata, a movie self-timer, and USB Livestreaming support.
In addition, the camera has built-in wireless WiFi connectivity or can be connected through USB for uploading and RAW processing. The Canon R50 Body is also available in either black or white finishes.
New Lenses

Alongside the two cameras, Canon is also launching two new lenses, including the Canon RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM and RF-S 55-210 F5-7.1 IS STM lens.
The full frame RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM is just over two inches long when fully retracted, and no more than 3.5 inches long when extended.
By contrast, the RF-S 55-210 F5-7.1 IS STM lens has a full frame equivalent of 88-336mm and close focusing of images about 2×3 inches in size.
Both lenses offer up to 4.5 stops of optical image stabilization and can be used on both RF and RF-S mount cameras.
Pricing and Availability
The Canon EOS R8 has a suggested retail price of $1,499.00 (body only), or $1699.00 with an RF24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM kit lens.
Meanwhile, the Canon EOS R50 has a retail price of $679.99 (body only) or $799.99 when coupled with the RF-S18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM kit lens.
The R50 is also available in a kit with two lenses, the RF-S18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM and RF-S55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM lenses, for $1,029.00.
As for the lenses, the Canon RF24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens has a retail price of $299.99, while the RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM lens is priced at $349.99. All products are currently scheduled to be available in the Spring of 2023.
