It was only a matter of time before 3rd party manufacturers started to make accessories and primarily cages for the Atomos Shogun, which has proven to be an inseparable part of many Sony A7s and GH4 shooters’ kit bags. And now with the even more affordable Atomos Shogun Barebones kit, the 4K HDMI recorder is even more affordable than ever. Prior, we’ve featured some really awesome cages for the Shogun from Canadian gear makers Shape, as well as cages from Varavon and PVGear. Today, Korean manufacturer Motion9, known for their compact and high-quality sliders and CUBE cages for the likes of Sony A7s and the BMPCC, have jumped on the “cage” train and are making a cage for the Shogun, which they’ve dubbed the CUBE Shogun.
Similar to the Shape cage, the CUBE Shogun can be used as a director’s monitor with the side handles or similarly used as a stand as the back metal brackets provide not only 1/4″ mounting points but can serve as stands for support as well. The nice thing about this cage is that the side handles come with the unit as well as the HDMI cable clamp, which protects the cables and holds them securely.
The high quality CNC machined design encases the unit nicely and allows for uninterrupted access to all buttons and media. The SSD Media caddy is protected via the SSD locking system which prevents it from slipping out of the cage. The included Voltage adapter and battery system (Cube Cage with the Battery option only) can power additional accessories such as wireless transmitters/receivers and follow focus units for example.
The Cube Shogun from Motion9 starts at $349 and goes up to $599 for the battery option.
The CUBE Shogun Cage Battery Kit ($599) includes a 2600 mAh battery with a charger, volt adapter, and 2 cables (15cm and 30cm). One thing to note about the CUBE Shogun cage is that you cannot use your Atomos Shogun Sunhood as the cage prevents proper mounting, however Motion9 offer a sun hood system they call OneTouch, which is compatible with the CUBE Shogun.

I expect this will appeal to a lot of gear heads, but it looks like a heavy expensive monstrosity. It doesn’t look like it will take my 8500mah battery either. The shogun needs a thick rubberized bumper that can absorb an impact and lock a cable in…that’s it.
